Kahuna Boardrider's 30th Anniversary of the Go For Gold

The ‘Go For Gold’ surfing contest is held annually by the Kahuna Boardriders club as part of the South Island Surfing Circuit. 2012 marked a proud milestone for the club, who have been combining friendly West Coast hospitality and amazing surf locations for a whopping 30 years! And 2012 was no different, with fun waves, collective camaraderie and surfing stoke on offer for competitors and spectators alike

Eleven events—including a special invitational for past winners and significant VIP’s from the club history—plus Kahuna's 31st Reunion, brought a great crowd of friends and family together over Waitangi weekend. JC Susan took out the Men's Open, but thanks to the hospitality of Kahuna Boardrider's, everyone was a winner (as the cliche goes). Another great aspect of the 2012 Go For Gold was the KBC Story Competition, which encouraged people to write down their thoughts, in order to help regain some of the Club’s history. There were some great stories read aloud on Reunion night, but the winning entry was 'Cobden Tip', an emotive address by Simon Ashby who played tribute to those who were no longer with us:

20 years I have known the Kahuna Board Riders

And in that time I have seen some funny things, and some awesome transformations of our club rooms.

The funniest time was when Gareth Royal's mum packed his lunch and he went surfing. Then Lewis, Cory, George and Andy ate it. He came back and punched Lewis in the nose. While Andy, Cory, George were having a good old laugh.

I remember one of the club members shaved off Gene's eyebrow and took all his clothes when he was pissed one night. The next morning as I was driving towards the club I saw Gene naked and running home! That's why I watch my back sometimes around here.
That was a funny sight!

Surfing is part of life, so is friendship, I call it stress-free living.

I have met and welcomed heaps of people at the Cobden tip over the years. I have used the sea for training young Brodie and now he's growing up to be our hopeful surfer with others like Nathan and Dion - I'm very proud of them.

The 'Vai Riders Cold Water' is a small competition, run by myself and the local team, the most awesome crew ever! They always support me, so many thanks to the Vai Riders.

And now?
I sit on the chair we made, watching the bright red sunset, and taking a moment, as tears run down my face, I ask myself questions, and say "I wish"

I wish Kane was here
I wish Gleno was here
I wish Toast was here
I wish Pete was here
I wish Callum was here
I wish Kylie Skeats was here
I wish my girlfreind was here to see what I've done,
I wish our fathers, mothers, brothers, & partners were here to see what we have done, that we've lost so much, in the past.

Just the cold offshore wind, makes it clear to me, of their presence.
I am so lucky to live here in Cobden and you all too, this is my home and yours.

I wish you all the best time tonight and welcome you all to the 31st Anniversary of Kahauna Boardriders.

New Zealand Fire Service Surf-riding Championships
Seventhwave is getting behind the 2012 New Zealand Fire Service Surf-Riding Championships which, after holding its inaugural event in New Plymouth in March 2004, has been held annually with events hosted in Taranaki & Auckland. The event is open to all past and present members, and their partners, of the New Zealand Fire Service, and is a popular competition due to fostering comradeship and reinforcing strong ties between fellow fire fighters from around the country.

The 2012 event is scheduled to run from 30 January until 2 February, and will be based ‘somewhere in the North Island’ depending on weather & surf conditions. The likely options will be Piha, Port Waikato, Coromandel, Taranaki, Gisborne and Wairarapa.

NMD North Island Bodyboard Champs
The 2012 Jucy/NMD North Island Bodyboard Champs in Kaitaia is the first event of the 2012 BBSNZ Tour and runs from the 3-6th February 2012. Designed from the input of bodyboarders across New Zealand, these events are sure to please both riders and spectators. Over $6,000 in prizes from Seventhwave and other partner sponsors makes this event a winner.

Canterbury Kiteboarding Champs 2012
Once again the always popular Canterbury Freestyle Kiteboarding Champs is just a couple of weeks off. For an impressive airshow of flicks, tricks and other Kiteboard antics, make sure to get down to the Estuary in Christchurch on January 21-22. A full field and a number of divisions looks set to create an great day of kiting, and Seventhwave will be there in support.

As well as making wetsuits under the Seventhwave banner, over the years we've made wetsuits for various companies and organisations—from YMCA and Wetspac Helicopters to Surf Schools across New Zealand. But when MAMBO asked us to make a line of wetsuits for their 'Mambassadors' (team riders) we got pretty excited. MAMBO have such a visually creative past—many of our team remember those classic MAMBO artworks that would grace the walls of groms around Australasia. So we knew we'd be in for some colourful concepts.

The world's first attempt at river-boarding down Sun Kosi River in Nepal is happening now. This has to be one of the craziest things as it is glacier feed by Mt Everest!

The team, led by Huw Miles, will be made up of world class international riverboarding guides who will attempt to navigate 280km of Sun Kosi to become the first team to riverboard this amazing river.

Estuary, rivers, beaches are all clean! Surfs up for summer!

Finally after more than one year and almost 8 billion litres of untreated wastewater overspill, Christchurch waterways have finally been declared open for recreational use.
The Avon and Heathcote rivers, the Estuary and Scarborough beach have today been reopened following extensive earthquake-damage repairs.
Since the September quake about 7.8 billion litres of untreated wastewater, which would fill more than 3100 Olympic-sized swimming pools, spilled into city rivers.
Sewer overflows reached a peak of around 85,000 cubic metres a day, across 28 different overflow sites, immediately after the February quake.
Christchurch City Council water and waste manager Mark Christison said over the past eight months that volume had reduced and as of today, discharges had stopped.
''There was around 12 kilometres of major sewer pressure mains that needed to be completely replaced before the sewer overflows could stop.
''We gave ourselves a deadline of having the waterways and beaches reopened in time for summer - it's been a tough challenge but the teams on the ground have worked hard and achieved our goal.''
He warned there would still be occasional discharges of untreated sewage into the rivers, as a result of problems encountered during repairs to pumping stations and pipes.
Christison said the situation would be monitored carefully over coming months, and it was likely that some small repair jobs would still be required to address isolated leaks.
Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said it was likely bacteria and viruses remained in river sediments, and all waterways must be avoided for 48 hours following heavy rain.

Taranaki Surfing reserve

The Surf Protection Society want the entire Taranaki coastline to become an official surfing reserve.

Mr Shanks said such a move would not necessarily give the surf breaks any greater legal protection than they now enjoy under the regional council's regional policy statement. "But what it would do is turn peoples' heads towards the importance of the coastline and its surf breaks. It would mean that if in the future there needed to be debate about any particular break and the effects any developments might have on it, the reserve classification would give us a base for the debate."

For the past 6 months Lyne Pringle has immersed herself in the shifting tides of South Dunedin. In this time she has choreographed the whole of Forbury School into an oceanic dance as it navigates its way through a decision by the Ministry of Education to close it down.

Ocean Wave investigates the notion of finding solace in the sea and the various ways that people interact with it. South Dunedin is one of the most densely populated urban areas in Australasia; one of the poorest neighbourhoods in New Zealand borders one of the most affluent; all inhabitants share a precarious border with a dynamic rising ocean that licks constantly at vulnerable sand dunes.

Sarah Mason has struck gold at the Swatch girls Pro junior France, winning the comp in style. She will now hopefully qualify for the ASP World Junior Series which starts October 3, in Bali, Indonesia.

Also Richard Christie placed equal 3rd at the ASP Super Surf International, a Prime rated event. Christie moves from number 55 on the ASP World Ranking to number 44.

You will find him surfing around the peninsula, mostly Hickory and Magnet bays, but sometimes he will set off with the wind for a map the sky for a clock in search of new destinations. Just to let you all know we are alive and all ok here in Christchurch. Thank you for your texts and emails of support and encouragement. The team at Seventhwave have all been lucky to escape without injury or any major damage or problems. Power and water is still to come on here and in many other suburbs. The damage from the earthquake has been extensive not just in the central business districts but also out here in the eastern suburbs. Roading and bridges, sewer, water and electricity, extensive damage totally disrupting everything and any movement. Most drastic is that the iconic Shag Rock has turned to shag pile. Most of the cliffs around Mt Pleasant to Sumner have been drastically changed, many houses sustaining damage and so many with their backs totally broken. Check the RSA and Sumner Community Centre below. For an aerial view of Christchurch earthquake check this footage. And if that's not enough we've got 'aftershocks', a daily occurrence, you can see them all on the Christchurch Quake Map.

The 2011 IBA World Tour kicks off today with the 2011 IBA Pipeline Pro in Hawaii. This year the contest will feature a Men’s, Women’s and DK Grand Slam all under the one umbrella, as well as an exhibition Masters event. As if that wasn't exciting enough, a multi-angle, replay-packed webcast, hosted by Manny Vargas, will be streamed LIVE. So stay tuned!

Seventhwave team rider and Dunedin local Ben Mackinnon will be competing and flying the New Zealand flag at the Pipeline comp. You can check out his progress on his own blog here.

Seventhwave and Sumner ripper Luke O'Neill cleans up at Sandy Bay!

The hotly contested Junior Division of the Sandy Bay leg of the Hyundai Longboard Tour saw Seventhwave ambassador Luke O'Neill (Sumner, Chch) and Nic Jones (Australia) put on a stellar performance for the crowd. O'Neill, who is the current Under 18 Boys National Champion, surfed with style well beyond his years and his nose riding ability was world class.

O'Neill's main opponent, Jones (AUS) is one of Australia's top juniors and both surfers executed some of the best hang ten's seen at the event. However, it was O'Neill who won the battle winning the final. Hone Douglas (Whakatane), who was stand out in the early rounds didn't quite get scores required placed third with fellow Whakatane surfer Joseph Stewart coming fourth.

Dancing through a canyon.. feedback from the edge!

I spent the 2010 summer canyoning in Europe, both guiding and recreationally. The European canyoners grunted through the canyons in 7mm one piece or 5mm two piece suits. I danced through the canyons in my Seventhwave Viper 3/3 — what a dream it was, with many envious onlookers! For the glacier-fed canyons I was toasty warm with a Hot Top and neoprene shorts underneath and comfortable from start to finish. Cheers Seventhwave!

Cold Water Classic comes to New Zealand in 2011

The O'Neill CWC Series will bring a 6 Star ASP World Tour event to Gisborne, on the North Island of New Zealand for the first time ever.

The O'Neill Cold Water Classic Series 2011 continues with its promise to push boundaries to find new remote waves around the world in which to host a world-class surfing competition series.

"We launched the Series in 2009 with the aim of discovering and exploring new locations around the world," said O'Neill Global Sportsmarketing Director, Bernhard Ritzer. "We are continually looking for new and exciting surf spots where we can bring this innovative series. In Gisborne we found all that the CWC Series represents; world-class remote waves, in the cold water of course. We also feel privileged to be able to highlight the strong Maori culture to bring further meaning to the event."

Gisborne is one place in the world that is all too familiar with "firsts". It is the first city in the world to greet the sun every morning. And it was the first area of New Zealand sighted by the crew of Captain James Cook's ship, the Endeavour.

And now, between March 23 and March 29, 2011, it will be the first stop on the O'Neill Cold Water Classic Series 2011.

Yamamoto Rubber Gaining Ground Against Traditional Neoprene

From www.prlog.org: Wetsuits made for surfing are undergoing a new shift in manufacturing. Many wetsuits are being made out of Yamamoto rubber instead of traditional neoprene. This material was unheard of a few years ago but in recent years has broken ground in the surfing wetsuit market.

So what is Yamamoto rubber? Interestingly enough it is a material made out of Limestone. The Yamamoto Corporation creates this special polymer out of the rock it mines from an ancient Mesozoic mountain. Traditional old-fashion neoprene is a petroleum-based product. Wetsuits made out of Yamamoto rubber are more flexible, lighter, warmer, and last longer than traditional neoprene wetsuits.

Most of the large surfing wetsuit brands have been slow to adapt to Yamamoto rubber. Several smaller brands have popped up the past few years to fill this void. Some of these new brands include Matuse, Boz, Isurus, and Seventhwave.

Surf To Summit Trailer: the crew surf and ski NZ in 5 days!

Over five action-packed days in September, Alex Herbert (Kingswood Skis), pro skier Tom Dunbar, pro snowboarder Maria Kuzma, and skier and surfer Angus Kebbell drove, choppered, ferried, flew, surfed and skied the length of the country from Cape Reinga on Day One (September 14) to Bluff on Day Five (by midnight September 18). The mega-storm that rocked New Zealand that week made for last-minute itinerary changes and a dramatic final surf on a snow-covered Southland beach.

Seventhwave made sure the team stayed warm with their very own MAX custom-fit steamers, which also came in handy when the team caravan got stuck in deep mud!

The Surf to Summit crew were joined by special guests Paige Hareb (ASP Surf Tour), Jossi Wells (free skiing world champ), Maz Quinn (WTC), Geoff Small (national big mountain champ, Ruapehu extreme champ), Sam Smoothy (national freeride champ), Sam Hawke (big wave legend), and a few of our very own Seventhwave riders.

New Zealand Junior Surfing Squad Named

"Surfing New Zealand has today (Thursday 23^rd December 2010) announced a squad of twenty one surfers in preparation for the 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Surfing Championship which takes place in Peru during May 2011.

The squad includes surfers from several regions throughout New Zealand with Gisborne and Auckland providing four surfers each as the most powerful regions. Coromandel and Mount Maunganui fill three slots each while Northland and Waikato surfers fill two slots and a surfer a piece from Hawkes Bay, Taranaki and Christchurch.

The build up to the world championship event in May will be extensive with multiple national events taking place every month from January through until April giving surfers extensive opportunities to press for selection.

The squad will also meet for a selection camp before the travelling team is named in March and further preparations take place"
