Canterbury Kiteboard Championship

Competitors in the Canterbury Kiteboard Champs - January 2013

The 2013 Canterbury Kiteboarding Champs got off to a great start with 30 riders turning up to entertain the crowd with their electrifying riding ability. The competition was held on the weekend of the 26th and 27th of January.

Saturday was warm and clear but not much wind so it was time for a SUP race (Stand Up Paddle board), Aaron Smith set a blistering pace while Dave from Australia found it easier going in reverse.
A bit of wind came through so the juniors were sent out for their contest where Jae Smith, aged 11 managed to beat Ethan Waitoa aged 10, both riders putting on a good display.
Next up party time- (Nathan and Ariana put on a dam good do, cheers guys).

Sunday started slowly for a few but by lunchtime the wind had picked up to 15 knots, and it was racing time. Tim Stockman showing his skills by claiming first place. By the end of the race the wind had picked up to 18 knots, enough to get the freestyle contest underway. All contestants throwing down tricks of the highest level to determine the Canterbury champion.
The prize giving, held at the Speights Ale House rounded up the weekend with the entrants getting the pick of the fantastic prizes supplied by our sponsors.

Congratulations to Fenella Mills who won the ASP kiteboard. Thanks to all the riders for some great entertainment, everyone who helped in setting up and running of the contest and the judges for their amazing effort.

A BIG thanks to the sponsors for their awesome support of this event.

What does bodyboarding, kiteboarding and the New Zealand Fire Service have in common?

A: Seventhwave! If you're of the competing kind, or just want to watch some action, then there are a few competitions on the horizon that you should probably know about. Plus there's Seventhwave prizes at stake.

New Zealand Fire Service Surf-riding Championships
Seventhwave is getting behind the 2012 New Zealand Fire Service Surf-Riding Championships which, after holding its inaugural event in New Plymouth in March 2004, has been held annually with events hosted in Taranaki & Auckland. The event is open to all past and present members, and their partners, of the New Zealand Fire Service, and is a popular competition due to fostering comradeship and reinforcing strong ties between fellow fire fighters from around the country.

The 2012 event is scheduled to run from 30 January until 2 February, and will be based ‘somewhere in the North Island’ depending on weather & surf conditions. The likely options will be Piha, Port Waikato, Coromandel, Taranaki, Gisborne and Wairarapa.

NMD North Island Bodyboard Champs
The 2012 Jucy/NMD North Island Bodyboard Champs in Kaitaia is the first event of the 2012 BBSNZ Tour and runs from the 3-6th February 2012. Designed from the input of bodyboarders across New Zealand, these events are sure to please both riders and spectators. Over $6,000 in prizes from Seventhwave and other partner sponsors makes this event a winner.

Canterbury Kiteboarding Champs 2012
Once again the always popular Canterbury Freestyle Kiteboarding Champs is just a couple of weeks off. For an impressive airshow of flicks, tricks and other Kiteboard antics, make sure to get down to the Estuary in Christchurch on January 21-22. A full field and a number of divisions looks set to create an great day of kiting, and Seventhwave will be there in support.

Kiwi Louis Tapper's Brazilian Kitesurfing Expedition

Adventure kitesurfer Louis Tapper is setting his sites on a new world record – to kite 2000km of Brazil’s coast to complete the “longest journey kitesurfing”.
Armed with one kite, one board and a backpack, Louis, 35, will spend the next month kiting and when there’s no wind, he’ll be walking.

Although multi-day adventures by paraglider, rowing and kayaking are well established, Kite expeditions of this nature are not common. “Kite surfing is slowly gaining popularity, but it deserves a better profile – it is a fantastic sport, it’s totally exhilerating and addictive,” says the New Zealander.
“I know many people (including my parents) think I’m a bit mad doing this, but it is a way for me to test my limits both physically and mentally, and also push the sport of adventure kitesurfing to the next level.” Louis, who lives in the notoriously windy city of Wellington, has pushed the limits of kiting before. In 2008, he traversed New Zealand’s dangerous Cook Strait (between the North and South Islands). And in 2009, he decided to fly with the big boys, kitesurfing 260km in 13 hours from Auckland to the Bay of Islands for yachting’s 2009 Coastal Classic race. Although not officially recognised, Eric Gramond is undisputably the kitesurf world distance record holder with his 13 day trip of 1450km along the coast of Brazil.
Louis trip aims to beat that by over 500km. The official Guinness record up until this point has been for distances completed under 24 hours (333km). This next adventure is expected to take a month – beginning around the 20-25th July in Salvador and ending in Sao Luis.

“To put the scale of 2000km into perspective, crossing from Australia to New Zealand in a straight line or following coastline of NZ from top to bottom is the same distance,” he says. “Brazil just happens to have mostly consistent wind and is much warmer, so I figured, why not?” Louis will carry minimal provisions – food, water, money, dry clothes, sandals, repair kit and pump – in a 35 litre backpack as he kites. Although a solo adventure, he is hoping other local kiters will join him for sections along the way.

Kitesurfing Colac Bay

Spotted! Mark Sedon sent us in this great pic of him in his MAX Steamer, ripping Southland's Colac Bay. From Mark:

"30 knot session, gusting 40. Cross off shore winds, 3 ft waves. Epic Colac Bay session......."

Cheers for the rad shot Mark.
