A Real Kiwi Adventure and a Surf Contest

By Seventhwave Team-Rider and Guest Blogger Ambrose McNeill

The Writer, Photo: CPL www.photocpl.co.nz/
On Friday the 15th of February I set out to travel from Christchurch to New Plymouth’s Fitzroy beach for the fourth event of the Hyundai longboard surfing tour. This was my third event for the year after travelling to the first event in Raglan and the third event in Sandy bay. Both comps had been super fun and successful weekends. In Raglan I won the first ever traditional ‘logging’ division and in Sandy bay I won the best noseride in the same division.  After two good comps I was pumped to head back up north.

My adventure started at Christchurch airport. In order to maintain a slender budget for the trip I had decided NOT to take my surfboard (instead borrow a friends) and also to catch a standby flight. For anyone that hasn’t traveled standby before, the idea is that you rock up to the airport half an hour before your planned flight with no ticket and they will sell you an unsold seat for a piece of banana bread and a live chicken or alternatively $69. If you don’t get on your intended flight they put you on the next one. Well, when I arrived at the airport there was a line longer than the tower of terror at Dreamland. Despite being a student myself, I had forgotten to take into account that university started on Monday and every man and his chicken were ditching Christchurch.
By the time I reached the front of the line there were no flights to New Plymouth and all that was left was a lone flight to Palmerston North…

On the plane ride to Palmerston North I frantically tried to colour in the words New Plymouth on an old banana box as this was hopefully going to be my ticket to making it the contest, I had 12 hours. I arrived in Palmerston North at 8.30pm and had a Taxi drop me on the main road out of town. As the sun went down on me and about twenty cars speed past things were looking grim. Just as I was about to call Mumud (the taxi driver who gave me his card) and find a hostel, a wee Toyota sedan pulled over. A middle aged couple said they were going to Wanganui and that I could stay the night with them there and start again in the morning. Although I could hear my mother’s voice telling me never to get into a car with strangers and stay at their house, I went with my sensible conscious and jumped in.

Carmel and her husband Tom were on their way to surprise their daughter and family for their grandsons first birthday. The family had no idea Carmel and Tom were coming to stay, let alone bringing a hitch hiker. After the initial surprise, “why the hell did you bring a hitch hiker to stay mum?” vibe, the Keppa family completely took me under their wing. I had an awesome night talking about the upcoming Super 15 season and being shown magic tricks by 12 year old Josh.

The next morning I set out at 6am. Wanganui to New Plymouth is a two hour drive and I had potential to be in the first heat at 8am. After only waiting fifteen minutes a huge milk tanker halted up in front of me. The truck was bound for Inglewood, about 20 minutes from New Plymouth. The driver, Paul, was a typical kiwi good sort and he filled me on his life as a Dad, the great parts of NZ, rugby picks for the year, and how all the truckies will radio in when they’ve seen a hot chick. We even stopped at a farm to pick up a few thousand litres of milk.

I texted my mate Sam Bound, a local surfer from Taranaki to see if he could pick me up in Inglewood and take me the last leg, “No worries Bro!”. I also texted the contest director Ben Kennings to see the start time of my heat and much to my joy he responded the contest wasn’t starting till 9.30. Yew!

Sam and I arrived at the contest at 9.30am and I had 2 hours until my heat. Mission accomplished.

The surf wasn’t what one would call pumping but there was a chest high clean wave rolling into the beach and getting better with the incoming tide. Although the late start was perfect for my arrival, it wasn’t for the waves and the onshore wind came up before long and quickly deteriorated the clean lines into ruffled peaks. However, it remained surfable and heats were banged out in all of the divisions; Stand Up Paddle, over 40s, over 50s, Open men, Junior men and Women. In my first heat in the Open mens I struggled to find the waves I wanted but did manage to pick off one good wave that cemented me second place and a spot in the quarterfinal.

Hanging out in-between the heats is often the best part of going to contests. Surfing is such a cool way to connect with people and I’ve made a bunch of rad friends from going to these events.

It’s fun just hanging out with everyone and lying about all the perfect barrels each of our home breaks has had in the last few weeks.
Hyundai sets up a massive covered deck with couches and umbrellas which is all really flash. I think it’s really for the corporate sponsors but the surfers always invade it and claim it as their fortress. There’s always a mean barby making burgers and sausages which is the perfect pre-comp meal for any good athlete.

At the end of the day I surfed my quarter final narrowly getting 3rd so was knocked out of the event. Despite the bumpy little waves there was some awesome surfing going on in all division in the early rounds.

On day 2 of the event the action really started to heat up, as did the sausages. The surf had cleaned up again and the sun was blazing and stayed like that all day. I got to surf in the ‘log’ division where surfers have to ride traditional heavily weighted single fin boards. The division is pretty much a free for all, the contestants are all sent out at once for half an hour and places are determined by who stood out for that whole session.

The stand out of the session was hands down Moti Proctor from Gisborne. It was one of Moti’s first surfs after being out of the water for a long period with injury. Moti’s style was unbeatable -surfing a 14 foot board in a pair of speedo’s. Moreover, on every wave he caught Moti would perform a series of manoeuvres that I have never seen in surfing. No one came close in style or originality but as is the subjective nature of surfing Moti was overlooked by the judges and robbed of a place on the podium. I had a bunch of fun waves in the heat and in the end was awarded second place which I was stoked on.

The Open final was really impressive and showed how high the standard of performance long boarding is in NZ. Thomas Kibblewhite from Auckland showed why he has qualified for the world champs this year by dominating the final.

Prize giving was wrapped up and then that was it. I said good-bye to all my North Island buddies and then hopped in a strangers car (nah, just jokes, thanks Brian and Branko) to Auckland were I got the last standby flight home to Christchurch.

Thanks to the Keppa family, Mumud, Paul the milk truck man, Ant McColl, Sam Bound, Brain Western and Branko, Mickey T and everyone else for all helping me out on the trip! You’re all rad.

Also thank you to Sadhana Surfboards for making me such awesome aquatic machines, CPL and Guy for letting me use the cool photos and to Seventhwave for the Retro Jacket that kept me toasty in Taranaki’s surprisingly 'chilly water.'

Canterbury Kiteboard Championship

Competitors in the Canterbury Kiteboard Champs - January 2013

The 2013 Canterbury Kiteboarding Champs got off to a great start with 30 riders turning up to entertain the crowd with their electrifying riding ability. The competition was held on the weekend of the 26th and 27th of January.

Saturday was warm and clear but not much wind so it was time for a SUP race (Stand Up Paddle board), Aaron Smith set a blistering pace while Dave from Australia found it easier going in reverse.
A bit of wind came through so the juniors were sent out for their contest where Jae Smith, aged 11 managed to beat Ethan Waitoa aged 10, both riders putting on a good display.
Next up party time- (Nathan and Ariana put on a dam good do, cheers guys).

Sunday started slowly for a few but by lunchtime the wind had picked up to 15 knots, and it was racing time. Tim Stockman showing his skills by claiming first place. By the end of the race the wind had picked up to 18 knots, enough to get the freestyle contest underway. All contestants throwing down tricks of the highest level to determine the Canterbury champion.
The prize giving, held at the Speights Ale House rounded up the weekend with the entrants getting the pick of the fantastic prizes supplied by our sponsors.

Congratulations to Fenella Mills who won the ASP kiteboard. Thanks to all the riders for some great entertainment, everyone who helped in setting up and running of the contest and the judges for their amazing effort.

A BIG thanks to the sponsors for their awesome support of this event.

Xanthe Bowater: update from across the globe

Late last month Seventhwave ambassador Xanthe Bowater left for Europe to compete in the 2012 Techno World Championships in the Netherlands. We have received some updates from Xanthe on her travels and experiences so far and she seems to be having a great time.

Starting her trip in Poland, she was entered in a regatta with some of the best sailors in the world at a Windsurfing Club/Hotel/Restaurant with a great setup for boards and small yachts, Xanthe was really impressed with the Learning programs, Hire and racing course.
While there the wind  didn't get over 5-6 knots which was a good and bad. Good as she had only had her plaster cast taken off her ankle from a hockey injury a week before, so she could ease herself back into windsurfing without putting too much pressure on it. Bad because she had to do a lot more physical pumping of her sail.

With three days of European sailing experience behind her, Xanthe was disappointed with how she went, but taking part in the regatta helped her in getting back regatta fitness in a great environment.
Xanthe and her father were loaned two brand new RS boards to train on, so they stayed in Sopot for a few more days to get some more training in and get her fitness levels back up.

She seems to be enjoying the European summer, and the challenge of competing and training with some of the best European sailors in  her class. It's a great chance for her to compare her skills and experiences.

From Poland the Bowater family travelled to Medemblik, Netherlands, where the World Champs will be held. They had an interesting journey getting there, with flat tyre's, stomach bugs, and accommodation muck ups, but arrived in the end, with some added sight seeing in there for good measure.

Xanthe is now back on her own board, and has training with some of the Brazilian, Hong Kong, Singaporean and Brazilian teams under her belt.
It's been good for her to see what she will be up against but Xanthe was looking forward to the rest of the New Zealand team arriving in the following days.
With the Regatta started we are looking forward to our next update from Xanthe with her results.

Glad to hear you are having fun and learning lots Xanthe, thanks for keeping us updated and we are looking forward to hearing more.

Kiwi champ off to the 2012 TECHNO 293 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Meet Xanthe Bowater, 16 year old windsurfer from Lyttelton. Brought up in a sailing family so yachting is certainly strongly in Xanthe’s genes. She has been racing dinghies since she was eight years of age and commenced windsurfing shortly after. She is the only South Island windsurfer competing in National course racing events, and one of only a handful of top young Female Windsurfers in New Zealand.

Xanthe entered in her first competition at 13 and won the North Island title that same year. The following year she was Nationals under 15 champion then kicked off her International career, competing in New Caledonia, and taking a podium position at just 14 years old.
In 2011 Xanthe headed over to San Francisco with six other keen young windsurfers to represent New Zealand at the Techno 293 World Champs.
Her results for the last season have been impressive, achieving top places in every competition she enters. This is her first season in slalom racing; she won the Canterbury Championships Junior event and was the youngest female competitor of the Nationals. Winning both the New Zealand and Oceanic under 17 titles and the prized Kendall cup series earlier this year Xanthe is definitely a name to watch.

In August she will be joining the International Competition once again travelling to the Netherlands to compete in the 2012 Techno World Championships. Whilst over there she is hoping to get extra training in with some of the European teams and also race in the Baltic regatta, Poland.
Having Windsurfing dropped from The Olympics this year has been a big blow but Xanthe has adopted a really positive attitude, focusing her attention on the World Championships and the other six competitions she has over the next seven months (which include another crack at the Australian Youth trials and Down Under Series).
She will also be competing to retain the Kendall Cup once again next year, competing in six regattas during the New Zealand sailing season.
Xanthe is heavily involved in her home club, Naval Point Club Lyttelton, playing a major part in the promotion of Windsurfing as a fun and competitive sailing option. She has been helping alongside local Windsports club, Windsurf New Zealand and Yachting New Zealand to make this happen, obviously seriously committed to the sport! She is now into her second season of teaching ‘Learn to Windsurf’ at the club, loving introducing children and adults to the sport that means so much to her, as well as helping out at the Club and Estuary as much as she can.
We are delighted to support Xanthe, and have her as part of the Seventhwave team.

Whale Watch Kaikoura Surf Classic June 2012

Kaikoura played host to the final round of the South Island surf circuit for 2012, on Queens birthday weekend. Day 1 was a beautiful sunny day with little wind down at the K, the ocean rolling beautiful double overheads at the beach for the masters, juniors, seniors & grand masters heats. Day 2 another lovely sunny day at Kahutara, swell having dropped to 3ft producing an awesome field for the womans, cadets and longboard heats. Day 3 was held at Meatworks, Meaties had possibly its best waves of the year on display, late morning was pumping to say the least, semi finalists able to showcase there skill on the great waves. 2pm Day 3 the southerly hit kaikoura during the Masters final and completely flattened & slopped the waves at meatworks, the competition was moved up the coast to Mangamaunu, where the bay sheltered the bitter southerly and provided long rides for the finals.

Kaikoura Boardriders Club spokesman Brent Proctor said the conditions were arguably the best ever for the three-day event, a permanent fixture in the Kaikoura diary for Queen's Birthday Weekend.

A number of Seventhwave team riders traveled north to the event, you can see many of them in the video showing off their Custom Wetsuits.
Look out for Luke O'Neill, Al Te Moananui (Bright Yellow) and Niwa Ututaonga.

Paige Hareb: testing our X-Over across the ditch

When Paige Hareb—kiwi World Tour surfing competitor and all around good sort—contacted us about trying out some Seventhwave gear, we didn't have to think twice. Before jumping on a plane to Australia for the Pro events of 2012, Paige did a quick measure up and sent us in her measurements. We made sure our X-Over Short John and a few other goodies were on the next flight via Lynne Dickinson of Pacific Media [Curl Magazine]. "I really love the blue and pink short john and how it looks at the back without a zip etc, very cool!!" wrote Paige. "Awesome!" Our lightweight rubber obviously helped her get off the ground in that second shot...

Unfortunately Paige has just fallen short of the Quaters at the ROXY event at Snapper Rocks, but she now heads to Bells Beach for event number two of the circuit. Seventhwave wish her all the best for the rest of 2012!

Meet our newest team rider...

Meet a very special Seventhwave ambassador, Hunter (Seventhwave) Thomson. In between chewing parking cones and tangling staff in lead, Hunter likes to hit his local spot, Lake Benmore—most summers he can be spotted charging there, wearing a custom-made buoyancy vest to match his boat. Hunter also likes bones and scraps of all kinds.
